Andrea Kovago's Voice Studio
About Dr. Andrea Kovago

Originally from Calgary, Alberta Canada, Andrea began her voice and piano studies from an early age before attending the University of Calgary to begin an Undergraduate degree in Music. Completing this degree at the University of Lethbridge, Andrea moved promptly to Minneapolis Minnesota in 2000 to continue her vocal studies at the University of Minnesota where she completed both a Master of Music degree and a Doctoral of Musical Arts degree in Vocal Performance. During this period, Andrea sang numerous recitals, operas and chamber works both on and off campus. On occasion, she also stage managed opera productions, all the while teaching group voice classes, voice pedagogy and voice elective lessons in addition to maintaining her own studies and lessons.

Andrea began teaching voice and piano 18 years ago. She now focuses her attention solely towards instructing voice to students of all levels and abilities. Andrea has maintained a very active private studio coupled with teaching in various institutions throughout Canada and the USA. Andrea is an avid member of The National Association of Teachers of Singing, the Music Teachers National Association, the Minnesota Music Teachers Association, Opera America, the National Opera Association, VASTA (Voice and Speech Trainers Association) and the College Music Society. Many of her former students are enjoying their own singing experiences in semi-professional organizations, theatres and various choral settings. Several of Andrea’s students have been successfully admitted into various music programs that include Music Therapy, Music Education, Voice Performance and Music Theatre and Dramatic performance in such schools as the Teacher’s College at Columbia University in New York, AMDA, (The American Musical and Dramatic Academy, New York), the University of Santa Barbara CA, University of Western Ontario, the University of Minnesota Twin Cities, Morris and Duluth campuses. Besides individual instruction, Andrea has worked with and coached large choral groups and has also enjoyed preparing small chamber and creative collaborative works with young singers throughout her teaching career.

As a performer, Andrea has always enjoyed singing in front of large audiences. At 22, she made her first solo debut singing soprano (at that time) in Mozart’s Requiem with the University of Calgary Chamber Choir and Orchestra. Since then, she has continued to perform this work and many others within this genre, (now as an alto) with several groups that include The Oratorio Society of Minnesota, Exultate Festival Choir and Orchestra, Kensington Sinfonia in Calgary, the Metropolitan Symphony Orchestra and the Bach Society of Minnesota. Andrea made her recording debut in 2002 with the Exultate Festival Choir and Orchestra, performing a newer version of Mozart’s Requiem complete with extra movements. Her latest recording was J.S. Bach’s B minor Mass completed in March of 2008, again with the Exultate Festival Choir and Orchestra. Besides singing oratorio, Andrea loves to sing opera and has performed many interesting roles that include, The Componist from Ariadne auf Naxos, Emilie from The Dangerous Liaisons, Meg Page from The Merry Wives of Windsor and Nancy and Mrs. Herring from Albert Herring. She continues to add to her repertory and constantly pursues new opportunities to perform, collaborate with fellow colleagues and coach in various settings.
